SINGAPORE : The euro edged down slightly to $1.1220 in early Asian trading today, after falling to its lowest level since May 2025 in the previous session, extending a 1.2 percent decline last week.
Against the British pound, the euro was trading at 84.83 pence in recent trading, after falling more than one percent last week.
The single European currency came under pressure due to concerns about rising debt levels and political gridlock in France, and the approaching early elections in Spain.
The euro’s decline represents the latest alarm bell for monetary policymakers facing a sharp rise in French borrowing costs that is beginning to spread to the wider eurozone.
In the broader market, the dollar continued to rise, supported by still-high U.S. Treasury yields, which hit their highest levels in several decades.
Against the Japanese currency, the dollar rose slightly to 157.92 yen.
The pound fell 0.02 percent to $1.3222.
The dollar index settled at 102.16, after hitting an 18-month high in the previous session.
