MUSCAT: As part of the National Risk Register awareness campaign, the authority outlined steps to protect individuals and families in the event of a radiological incident in their area.
Radiation exposure can occur from natural, medical, occupational or accidental sources, with the level of risk depending on the type of radiation, the dose received and the duration of exposure.

What to do during a radiological incident

The CDAA advises people to:
• Enter the nearest safe building and remain indoors.
• Move to the centre of the building, away from windows, doors and exterior walls.
• Close all windows and doors.
• Turn off ventilation systems that draw air from outside.
• Follow official instructions and remain indoors until authorities advise otherwise.

People who were outdoors when an incident occurred should carefully remove their outer clothing and place it in a sealed plastic bag away from people and animals. Exposed skin should be washed with water and soap, while any further decontamination measures should be carried out according to instructions from the competent authorities.

Food and water safety

The authority also advised the public not to consume uncovered or potentially contaminated food. Residents should use food and drinking water kept in sealed containers or stored safely and follow official guidance on the safety of local food and water supplies.
Role of CDAA

The Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority said its role includes responding to emergencies, conducting initial assessments, coordinating with relevant authorities and implementing initial protective measures.
It may also support protection and evacuation operations when necessary and provide guidance and instructions to the public.

The authority stressed that public awareness and compliance with official instructions are essential to protecting individuals, families and the wider community during a radiological emergency.
