MUSCAT: Oman has postponed a regional meeting scheduled to take place in Salalah on Monday involving Iran and Gulf states, with discussions expected to focus on commercial navigation and security in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Oman News Agency said on Sunday that the meeting would be rescheduled to a later date to provide suitable conditions for constructive dialogue and help reach sustainable understandings that support regional security and stability.

Oman’s Foreign Minister, H.E. Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, said the decision was taken “in the interests of consensus”.

“In the interests of consensus the regional meeting set for tomorrow in Salalah has been postponed. We remain committed to fostering dialogue that supports stability and lasting cooperation in our region,” Al Busaidi said.

No new date for the meeting has been announced.

The Salalah talks had been expected to bring together representatives from Iran and Gulf Cooperation Council states, with Iraq also expected to participate, amid diplomatic efforts to address commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran had earlier said the meeting would discuss the outcome of negotiations between Tehran and Muscat concerning arrangements for safe commercial shipping routes through the strait.
