Paris: Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal headline the 30-man shortlist for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, while eight-time winner Lionel Messi has also earned a place among the nominees following another remarkable year for club and country.

The nominees were unveiled on Tuesday, officially beginning the race for football’s most prestigious individual honour ahead of the awards ceremony at the London Palladium on October 26.

The 2026 edition will mark the 70th anniversary of the Ballon d’Or and the first time the ceremony has been staged in England, in a tribute to English football great Stanley Matthews, who won the inaugural award in 1956.

Kane is among the leading contenders after a prolific campaign for Bayern Munich and England.

The England captain scored 73 goals in 65 matches for club and country, helping Bayern win the Bundesliga, German Cup and German Super Cup, while also leading England deep into the World Cup. His performances have put him firmly in contention to become the first Englishman to win the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001.

Mbappé is also expected to mount a strong challenge after another outstanding season with Real Madrid. The French forward finished as the top scorer in both La Liga and the Champions League and then claimed the World Cup Golden Boot with 10 goals.

Spain and Barcelona sensation Yamal, meanwhile, remains one of the most compelling candidates after another breakthrough year. Still only 19, he played a major role as Spain won the World Cup and continued to establish himself among the game’s biggest stars.

Messi, who has won the Ballon d’Or a record eight times, has also returned to the shortlist.

The Argentine legend produced 75 goal contributions in 49 matches for Inter Miami and Argentina and helped his country reach the World Cup final, adding another chapter to one of football’s most decorated careers.

Other major names among the nominees include Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham, Vinícius Júnior, Rodri, Declan Rice, Ousmane Dembélé and Lautaro Martínez.

Defending winner Dembélé is also in contention as Paris Saint-Germain enjoy a strong presence on the shortlist.

The Ballon d’Or, organised by France Football in partnership with UEFA, recognises the outstanding performances of players over the season.
