New York: Carlos Alcaraz powered into the quarter-finals of the US Open after defeating American Tommy Paul in straight sets, keeping alive his bid to successfully defend his title at Flushing Meadows.

The Spaniard produced an assured performance to beat Paul 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 and secure a place in the last eight for the fifth time in six US Open appearances.

Alcaraz, who returned to singles competition at the tournament following a nearly five-month absence because of a right wrist injury, has quickly rediscovered his rhythm in New York. The victory extended his winning streak at Grand Slam tournaments to 18 matches.

The 23-year-old seven-time Grand Slam champion dictated much of the contest with his aggressive shot-making, using the pace and power of his groundstrokes to keep Paul under pressure.

Although the American offered resistance and tested Alcaraz during several exchanges, the defending champion remained composed at the crucial moments and sealed the match with another commanding forehand.

The victory also continued Alcaraz’s impressive record against American opponents at Grand Slam tournaments, taking his record against them to 13-0.

Speaking after the match, Alcaraz said he was pleased to have been able to play his preferred attacking style, while acknowledging the challenge posed by Paul’s powerful game.

He said he tried to remain offensive throughout the contest and expressed satisfaction with his level as he continues to build confidence following his injury layoff.

Alcaraz will next face American Ben Shelton, who defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 to book his place in the quarter-finals.
