Kathmandu: The death toll from devastating floods and mudslides along the Nepal-China border has climbed to 1,387, as rescue teams continue searching for thousands of people still missing following one of the region’s deadliest natural disasters in recent years.

Authorities in Nepal have confirmed 1,344 deaths, while 4,898 people remain missing. Officials said 2,232 DNA samples have been collected as efforts continue to identify victims recovered from the disaster zone.

Across the border in China’s Tibet region, authorities have reported 43 deaths and 519 people missing, taking the combined confirmed death toll in Nepal and Tibet to 1,387.

The catastrophe struck on August 26, when a massive collapse of ice, rock and debris in the Himalayan border region triggered a powerful surge of water and mud through river valleys below. The torrent swept through settlements, destroying homes, roads, bridges and other critical infrastructure.

The disaster caused particularly severe damage around the Nepal-Tibet border corridor, with entire communities and key transport links buried under mud and debris.

Search and rescue operations remain underway on both sides of the border as authorities attempt to locate survivors and recover bodies.
