Oman Grand Prix draws athletes from 50+ nations

The first edition of the Grand Prix Athletics Championship got underway at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher, bringing together male and female athletes from more than 50 countries for 31 track and field competitions.

MUSCAT : Organised by the Oman Athletics Federation, the championship forms part of the World Athletics Continental Tour at Bronze level, alongside International Challenge Tour events, giving participating athletes valuable ranking points and opportunities to strengthen their qualification prospects for major international championships.

Oman’s national athletics team made an impressive start to the competition, securing several podium finishes across the programme.

Among the standout performances, Fatih Jaaboub claimed first place in the men’s high jump, ahead of Egypt’s Abdelrahman Saber and the USA’s Isaiah Holmes.

Oman also celebrated victory in the men’s triple jump as Salem Al-Rawahi secured top spot, followed by Saudi Arabia’s Issa Jarrah and Ahmed Tharwat.

In the men’s 100 metres, Ali Al-Balushi gave the home crowd another reason to celebrate by taking first place. American Braunoud Schicklin finished second, while Oman’s Mulham Al-Balushi secured third.

The Omani team also finished second in the men’s 4×100-metre relay, behind Malaysia.

Elsewhere in the men’s competitions, Egypt’s Mostafa El-Gamel won the hammer throw, with Qatar’s Ashraf El-Shafei finishing second and Japan’s Tatsuo Nakajawa taking third.

Egypt’s Youssef Bekkat topped the shot put, ahead of Qatar’s Djebrin Ahmet and Hamza Sos, while Ethiopia’s Bola Melaku won the long jump, followed by South Africa’s Lufu Manyango and Malaysia’s Ander Anwar.

The UAE’s Sulaiman Abdulrahman claimed victory in the 400 metres, ahead of Morocco’s Houssam Hattab and Japan’s Fuga Sato.

Puerto Rico’s Ryan Sanchez won the 800 metres, with France’s Youssef Benzema in second and Turkey’s Salah Tseköz third.

American Braunoud Schicklin returned to the podium with victory in the 200 metres, ahead of South Africa’s Tsebo Matos and Japan’s Ryūt Yagūmata.

Ethiopian athletes dominated the 300 metres, with Gundan Abo taking first place, Issa Abo second and Bekele Katse third.

Turkey’s Salah Teskuz won the 1500 metres, followed by Somalia’s Abdikdar Suleiman and Ethiopia’s Shele Etshech.

In the 110-metre hurdles, South Africa’s Mondria Barander finished first, ahead of the Netherlands’ Lama Scheff and Kuwait’s Yaqoub Al-Youha.

The women’s competitions also produced strong international performances.

In the discus throw, the UAE’s Fatima Al Hosani secured first place, with compatriot Salma Al Marri finishing second.

Canada’s Jalina Weir won the women’s hammer throw, followed by the UAE’s Salma Al Marri and Dima Al Marri.

Nigeria’s Fada Kapseng claimed the long jump title, ahead of Dutch athlete Bente Stol and Turkey’s Yasemin Burak.

In the women’s high jump, Emirati athlete Alia Al Mughairi took first place, with Iraq’s Maryam Abdullah second and Iran’s Asel Gholmal third.

Argentina’s Magdalena Ord won the under-18 girls’ 80-metre race, ahead of Egypt’s Yara El-Sarj and the UAE’s Alia Saeed.

The UAE secured the top two positions in the women’s 400 metres, with Mariam Karim taking first and Amniyat Kamardin second, while Bahrain’s Safna Abdulghani finished third.

Kenya dominated the women’s 800 metres as Paulina Naus claimed victory ahead of compatriot Nellie Gap, with Ethiopia’s Dorasto Gobene taking third.

Larina Alonos of the Dominican Republic won the women’s 100 metres, followed by Singapore’s Veronica Birmer and Qatar’s Dana Salem.

Birmer then claimed victory in the 200 metres, ahead of Alonos and the UAE’s Amniyat Kamardin.

Malaysia rounded off a strong showing by winning the women’s 100-metre relay, with Kuwait finishing second and Abu Dhabi Club taking third.
