KATHMANDU : According to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), 4,247 people remain unaccounted for, while 267 people have been injured in the disaster. A total of 20,819 security personnel from the Nepali Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force have been deployed for search, rescue and relief operations.

The disaster struck on Wednesday, August 26, when a massive flow of ice, rock, mud and debris swept through the Nepal-Tibet border region and surged into the Bhote Koshi River following a glacier collapse.

The flash floods caused widespread destruction across several districts, damaging homes, roads, bridges and critical infrastructure, including hydropower facilities.

Among those missing are 933 workers linked to hydropower projects, with rescue operations focused on reaching hundreds believed to be trapped inside tunnels blocked by mud and debris.

Authorities said search teams are working in extremely difficult conditions as unstable terrain and the continuing threat of landslides hamper operations.

Nepalese officials also warned residents on Sunday of the possibility of further flooding after water levels in the Bhote Koshi River began rising again. People in vulnerable and previously affected areas were urged to move to higher ground.

Rescue teams continue to search for the missing and evacuate stranded residents, while authorities monitor river levels and landslide risks across the disaster-hit region.
