TEHRAN: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called for greater unity among Muslim nations on Thursday, saying political and regional differences should not prevent Islamic countries from standing together.

Speaking at the 40th International Islamic Unity Conference in Tehran, Pezeshkian also condemned what he described as US-Israeli aggression against Iran and said the country remained capable of defending itself.

“Iran stood strong against US-Israeli aggression,” Pezeshkian said in remarks carried by Iranian state media.

“Iran is not in a weak position and it knows how to defend itself,” he added.

Pezeshkian said Iran had not initiated the conflict in the region, accusing the United States and Israel of launching a war against his country.

“The US and the Zionist entity launched a war on Iran,” he said, adding that Iran had “stood firmly against the aggressors”.

The Iranian president also reiterated Tehran’s warning against neighbouring countries allowing their territory to be used as a base for attacks on Iran.

“No Muslim country should pursue its security in the insecurity of its neighbours,” Pezeshkian said.

“No Muslim country’s territory should be used against another Muslim nation,” he added.

Pezeshkian framed greater cooperation among Islamic countries as essential to regional stability, urging Muslim nations to overcome their differences and resist divisions that could deepen tensions across the region.
