The election marked the first time in approximately three-and-a-half decades that Bangladesh witnessed a contested presidential race, with candidates representing both the ruling side and the opposition.
Mirza Fakhrul, a longtime senior BNP leader and former secretary-general of the party, takes over as head of state following the resignation of former President Mohammed Shahabuddin. Although Bangladesh’s presidency is largely ceremonial, the President serves as the country’s constitutional head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
The newly elected President is expected to take the oath of office on Friday, August 21.
