DHAKA : The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate received 255 votes, comfortably defeating opposition candidate Oli Ahmed, who secured 88 votes in the parliamentary ballot held on Thursday.

Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin, who served as the returning officer for the election, announced the results after voting concluded at the Jatiya Sangsad. A total of 343 lawmakers cast their ballots, with all votes declared valid.

Oli Ahmed contested as the candidate backed by the opposition alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami.

The election marked the first time in approximately three-and-a-half decades that Bangladesh witnessed a contested presidential race, with candidates representing both the ruling side and the opposition.

Mirza Fakhrul, a longtime senior BNP leader and former secretary-general of the party, takes over as head of state following the resignation of former President Mohammed Shahabuddin. Although Bangladesh’s presidency is largely ceremonial, the President serves as the country’s constitutional head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

The newly elected President is expected to take the oath of office on Friday, August 21.
