TEHRAN : According to the spokesperson of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of Iran’s parliament, the framework has been agreed upon in principle but remains subject to final approval at a higher level.

The development follows days of diplomatic engagement over the Strait, with Iran’s Foreign Ministry earlier saying Tehran and Muscat had reached an understanding on the geographical coordinates of a proposed shipping route and were working towards a joint announcement.

Iranian officials, however, appear to be positioning the arrangement with Oman within a broader vision for regional security.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said security in the Gulf should be ensured by countries of the region rather than foreign powers, reflecting Tehran’s push for a Gulf-led security framework.

President Masoud Pezeshkian also said Iran does not seek confrontation with its Gulf neighbours, while accusing the United States and Israel of attempting to bring regional states together against Tehran.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi similarly called for greater unity among Muslim countries and urged regional states not to depend on foreign powers for their security.

The latest developments reinforce Oman’s role in efforts to find a political solution to the Strait of Hormuz crisis. However, Iranian officials have cautioned that an understanding between Tehran and Muscat alone may not be sufficient to guarantee security in the waterway.
