DOHA — Qatar has declared four days of public mourning following the death of former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Amiri Diwan announced on Sunday.
The mourning period will begin on July 12, with flags flown at half-mast across the country in honour of the former ruler, who died at the age of 74.
As part of the mourning measures, government ministries, public institutions and state agencies will suspend work from Monday, July 13. Employees are scheduled to return to work on Sunday, July 19, according to the announcement carried by Qatar News Agency (QNA).

Sheikh Hamad, who ruled Qatar from 1995 until his abdication in 2013, is widely credited with transforming the Gulf state into a major regional and international player through economic reforms, infrastructure development and an assertive foreign policy.
