Kansas City: In one of the most dramatic matches of the group stage, Algeria and Austria shared six goals in a result that sent both nations into the knockout rounds.
Austria took the lead through Marko Arnautovic in the 28th minute before Rafik Belghali restored parity for Algeria just before half-time. Marcel Sabitzer put Austria back in front in the 55th minute, only for Riyad Mahrez to level the score again five minutes later.
Mahrez appeared to have sealed Algeria’s victory with his second goal in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time, but Sasa Kalajdzic struck two minutes later to rescue a dramatic draw for Austria.

The result left both teams on four points. Austria finished second in Group 10 on goal difference, while Algeria claimed one of the tournament’s eight best third-placed spots to advance to the Round of 32. It marks Algeria’s first appearance in the knockout stage since the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Algeria will face Switzerland, winners of Group B, on July 3 in Vancouver, Canada. Austria, meanwhile, will take on European champions Spain, who topped Group H, on July 2 in Los Angeles.
Elsewhere, Argentina completed a flawless group-stage campaign with a 3-1 win over Jordan.
Giovani Lo Celso opened the scoring in the 19th minute before Lautaro Martinez doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the 31st minute. Jordan’s Musa Al-Taamari pulled one back in the 55th minute, but substitute Lionel Messi sealed Argentina’s victory with an 80th-minute strike.
The win saw Argentina finish top of Group 10 with a maximum nine points and set up a Round of 32 clash against Cape Verde on July 3. Jordan exited the tournament without a point, bringing its first-ever FIFA World Cup campaign to an end.
