LONDON – Starmer’s decision comes after mounting pressure within the party for a leadership change amid declining public support and concerns over Labour’s political future.
The resignation follows the recent victory of Andy Burnham in a special election, with the former mayor of Greater Manchester emerging as a potential challenger for the Labour leadership.
Starmer became prime minister after leading Labour to a decisive election victory in July 2024. However, both his personal approval ratings and the party’s popularity have fallen significantly during his time in office.
