The country’s Emergency Operations Center stated that strong winds contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. Officials also noted that parts of the resort’s roof were constructed using thatch, which may have accelerated the blaze.
Firefighters and emergency teams worked for hours to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading further. No additional fatalities have been reported.
Investigations are currently underway to determine the exact cause of the fire. Authorities have assured affected tourists that support and temporary accommodation arrangements are being provided while assessments of the damage continue.
The Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham resort is located on the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic and is a popular destination known for attracting international visitors throughout the year.
