New Delhi: Loss-making Air India announced on Tuesday the launch of a new “Basic” fare category for select domestic flights, allowing passengers to travel at lower fares without receiving complimentary meals onboard.
The airline said the new fare is entirely optional and is being trialled on selected domestic routes. Passengers can continue to choose from the existing Value, Classic and Flex fare categories, all of which include complimentary meals along with additional bundled benefits.
The introduction of the Basic fare marks one of the first major changes to Air India’s service offerings since its privatisation in January 2022. Traditionally, full-service airlines have included complimentary meals as part of the ticket price, while low-cost carriers typically charge separately for onboard food and beverages.

According to the airline, the new fare option is designed for travellers who prioritise affordability and prefer a more unbundled travel experience.
Under the Basic fare, Economy Class passengers will receive a checked baggage allowance of 15 kilograms and a cabin baggage allowance of 7 kilograms. Complimentary beverage service will continue to be provided, but meals will not be included.
Air India noted that the Value, Classic and Flex fare categories, introduced in 2024, will remain available and continue to offer complimentary meals along with progressively enhanced travel benefits.
The airline said the new fare structure adds another layer of choice for passengers while helping the carrier manage costs in an increasingly competitive aviation market.
