MUSCAT – The Optimist World Championship is one of the most prominent international sailing competitions for the junior category, serving as a global platform for discovering and developing young talents. Over the years, the championship has featured many world and Olympic champions at the beginning of their sporting careers.
Oman will be represented by five sailors from the national Optimist team: Mohammed bin Sulaiman Al Balushi, who won the bronze medal in the Optimist Under-11 category at the 2026 Arab Sailing Championship; Khalid bin Yahya Al Suraihi, who secured the silver medal in the overall Optimist category at the same championship; Mohammed bin Nabil Al Balushi; Mohammed bin Ziyad Al Qasimi; and Mohammed bin Saeed Al Qurtubi.
The team is supervised by coach Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Al Zadjali.

Nawaf bin Yaqoub Al Ghadani, Vice President of Sailing Schools and Head of Mission, said the Optimist World Championship represents an important milestone in the development journey of young sailors due to the high level of competition it provides.
He added that the team has implemented an integrated preparation programme focusing on the technical, physical and mental development of the sailors, expressing hope that the athletes will deliver performances that reflect the progress achieved and strengthen Oman’s presence in international sailing events.
The official races will begin on June 20 and continue until June 27, with the championship featuring 12 races across different stages of the competition.
The participation forms part of Oman’s wider programme to develop young sailing talents. The Optimist team will continue preparations through a five-week summer training camp in Ras Al Hadd, bringing together several national teams for an intensive training programme.
The team is also scheduled to participate in the 2026 Optimist European Championship in Gdynia, Poland, next July, followed by the Oman Sailing Championship in August.
The team’s participation will continue in the second half of the season, with Al Musannah Sailing School hosting the 15th edition of Al Musannah Sailing Week, in addition to the third edition of the Arab Sailing Championship for Girls.
