DUBAI – Several Indian expatriate workers were among seven people killed in a road accident in Dubai on Monday, the Indian Consulate said, after a minibus crashed into a truck that had broken down on a major highway.

The accident occurred on Emirates Road when a truck stopped in the middle of the roadway due to a technical malfunction and was subsequently struck from behind by a minibus, according to Dubai Police.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, the Indian Consulate in Dubai said it was deeply saddened by the incident and had dispatched officials to assist those affected.

“Deeply saddened by the tragic road accident in Dubai that claimed the lives of several Indian workers. Our officials visited the hospital, met the injured Indians, and are working closely with local authorities to provide all possible assistance and support,” the mission said.

The consulate added that its condolences and prayers were with the families of those who lost their lives.

Dubai Police said seven people were killed and nine others injured in the collision. Five of the injured suffered serious injuries, while four sustained moderate injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.

“The bus driver, reportedly failing to pay attention and maintain a safe distance, collided with the truck from behind,” Brigadier Juma Salem bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, said in a statement.

Authorities have not released the identities or nationalities of all the victims. The Indian Consulate said it was coordinating closely with Dubai Police and health authorities to provide support to Indian nationals affected by the accident.

Indians constitute one of the largest expatriate communities in the United Arab Emirates, with many workers relying on shared transportation for daily commutes to and from workplaces.

An investigation into the accident is underway.
