MANILA – The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake occurred at a depth of 35 kilometres off the coast of Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines.
Following the earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued a statement warning that tsunami waves could affect coastal areas of the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau, Taiwan and Papua New Guinea within the next three hours.
According to the PTWC, tsunami wave heights could reach between one and three metres above tide level along parts of the Philippine coastline, while waves ranging from 0.3 to one metre above tide level are possible along the coasts of Indonesia and Malaysia.

The Japan Meteorological Agency also issued a tsunami warning for the country’s Pacific coast, stretching from the northern islands of Okinawa to areas east of Tokyo.
The Philippines is among the world’s most seismically active countries due to its location along the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, a region where several major tectonic plates converge, resulting in frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
