MUSCAT : The Muscat Municipal Council, chaired by His Highness Sayyid Bilarab bin Haitham Al Said, Minister of State and Governor of Muscat, reviewed Oman’s progress toward achieving net zero emissions by 2050 during its meeting on Sunday.
The council received a presentation from the Ministry of Energy and Minerals on the role of the Oman Net Zero Centre in supporting the goals of Oman Vision 2040 and advancing the Sultanate’s transition towards a green economy and environmental sustainability.
During the session, Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, highlighted the centre’s role in leading national efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 through the development and implementation of climate-related strategies, carbon reduction initiatives, and energy efficiency programmes in coordination with relevant stakeholders.

Mohsin bin Sulaiman Al Jabri, Director General of the Oman Net Zero Centre, presented updates on the national net zero plan, including sector-specific emissions reduction pathways and the roadmap for implementation. He also outlined the expected economic and developmental benefits, including strengthening Oman’s competitiveness, supporting green industries, attracting quality investments, and creating new employment opportunities in sustainability-related sectors.
The council also reviewed the centre’s efforts to regulate carbon markets and develop the national “Meezan” platform for emissions monitoring and management. The platform is designed to provide accurate data to support informed decision-making and enhance Oman’s readiness to meet its climate commitments while reinforcing its role in global efforts to combat climate change.
Separately, the council approved the minutes of its previous meeting, including recommendations related to the Muscat Nights festival, stressing the importance of expanding and improving events and activities across the governorate to maximise public benefit.
The council further reviewed recommendations from its Social Affairs Committee regarding livestock enclosures in residential neighbourhoods within Muscat, highlighting the need for sustainable regulatory solutions to minimise their impact on residential environments and the urban landscape while improving quality of life.
In addition, members examined correspondence from relevant authorities, including proposals linked to alternative zones under the Eleventh Five-Year Plan for agricultural areas in the Wilayat of Qurayyat, as part of ongoing efforts to support sustainable urban planning and efficient land-use management across the governorate.
