MUSCAT : US President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran has already agreed not to pursue nuclear weapons, describing the issue as a key outcome of ongoing discussions between Washington and Tehran.

Speaking on the New York Post’s Pod Force One podcast, Trump said preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remains the United States’ primary objective.

“We can’t let them have a nuclear weapon, and they’ve already agreed they’re not going to have a nuclear weapon. That was the big thing,” Trump said.

The US president also rejected suggestions that Iran holds a strong position in the current conflict, arguing that the country’s military and economic capabilities have been significantly weakened.

“Iran has no navy. They have no air force. They have very few soldiers. They have no leadership,” Trump said. “Their economy is crashing. They have 250 per cent inflation. They have everything that you can have that’s bad.”

Commenting on concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route, Trump said he does not expect any disruption to continue for long.

“I think this will resolve itself fairly quickly,” he said, adding that the United States is achieving “very great success in Iran militarily.”

Trump also addressed questions about Iran’s leadership, confirming that Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is involved in negotiations.

“He’s involved, absolutely,” Trump said.

The US president suggested that Khamenei is providing approval for key decisions, describing the arrangement as part of a long-standing succession process within Iran’s leadership structure.

“They say he is giving approval because that’s the way it has been for a long, long time. His father and then him, I guess it’s a succession,” Trump said.

He further indicated that direct engagement between the two sides could take place in the future.

“We seem to be getting along quite well. We probably will meet at some point, depending on how it all works out,” Trump said.
