GENEVA – WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement that 101 cases of Ebola have been confirmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The World Health Organisation had previously declared that the outbreak of the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus constituted a public health emergency of international concern, adding that the risk of a nationwide epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo was ‘very high’.
The organization stressed that delays in detecting cases, the lack of vaccines or treatments for the virus, the spread of armed attacks, and high rates of population mobility are all factors that make the Democratic Republic of Congo particularly vulnerable.
