NEW DELHI – The Press Trust of India (PTI) and local media outlets quoted Telangana Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy as confirming that the deaths, all of which were recorded last Friday, were mainly due to the current heat wave hitting the state in southern India, noting that the victims came from different areas within the state.

Indian newspaper ‘Times of India’ quoted a local health official explaining that the 16 deaths were not all a direct result of heatstroke, indicating that some of the victims, specifically the elderly, had pre-existing chronic illnesses that were exacerbated by the sharp and sudden rise in temperatures.

A severe heat wave has been gripping large parts of India for several days.
