Gunman killed, passerby shot in exchange of fire near White House checkpoint

A suspect was killed following an exchange of gunfire with security personnel near the White House in Washington, DC, the United States Secret Service said.

WASHINGTON — According to the agency, the incident occurred near a security checkpoint at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, close to the White House complex, when a man reportedly removed a firearm from his bag and opened fire on security officers.

Secret Service personnel returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect, the agency said in a statement.

In a separate statement, the Secret Service said a passerby was also struck by gunfire during the incident, although the extent of the injuries remains unclear. Authorities said it was not immediately known whose bullet hit the bystander.

The agency confirmed that no law enforcement officers were injured in the shooting.

US President Donald Trump was at the White House at the time of the incident, according to the Secret Service.
