KOCHI — V. D. Satheesan, senior Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing Assembly, has been chosen by the Congress high command as the next Chief Minister of Kerala, bringing to a close 10 days of intense deliberations following the United Democratic Front’s sweeping victory in the Assembly elections.
The decision caps days of closed-door consultations and factional negotiations within the party, with Satheesan ultimately emerging as the consensus choice over other senior Congress leaders, including K. C. Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala.
A six-time MLA known for his strong public appeal and organisational influence within the state unit, Satheesan’s appointment is being seen as a generational shift in Kerala Congress leadership. His selection comes after marathon discussions among senior leaders in Kerala and the party’s central leadership in New Delhi, amid intense lobbying by various factions over the chief ministerial post.
