Geneva: WHO said that eight suspected infections had been reported on board the cruise ship, of which six were laboratory-confirmed as Hantavirus cases.
According to the organization, all confirmed cases were linked to the Andes virus strain (ANDV), a type of Hantavirus known to circulate in parts of South America. The outbreak has so far resulted in three deaths.
The WHO stated that while the risk posed by the incident to the global population is currently considered low, the level of risk for passengers and crew members aboard the ship has been classified as moderate.
