NEW YORK – Guterres stressed in a statement published via the ‘X’ platform that there is no military solution to the current conflict, calling for a resumption of negotiations to reach an agreement, while emphasising the need to fully maintain the current ceasefire and prevent any violations.

He also stressed the importance of respecting freedom of navigation, including in the Strait of Hormuz, in accordance with international law.

The United States has begun imposing a naval blockade targeting traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, as President Donald Trump warned of military action against Iranian ships, while Tehran condemned the move as illegal.

This comes after 21 hours of talks between Washington and Tehran, held in Pakistan, failed to reach an agreement.
