KOCHI : Campaigning for the Kerala Assembly elections will conclude on Tuesday, setting the stage for a closely contested and increasingly multi-cornered battle as voters prepare to head to the polls.

The election, traditionally marked by a straight contest between the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), has taken on a more layered dynamic this time, with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) seeking to make inroads in key constituencies.

All three fronts intensified their campaigns in the final days, focusing on welfare delivery, governance records and development promises, while also trading allegations aimed at swaying undecided voters.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is seeking a rare consecutive term for the LDF, banking on the government’s welfare initiatives and administrative track record. The UDF, meanwhile, has positioned the election as a referendum on the ruling front, highlighting issues of governance and anti-incumbency.

The NDA, although yet to establish a strong electoral base in the state, has mounted a targeted campaign in select constituencies, contributing to triangular contests in several seats, particularly in urban pockets.

Political observers say the outcome could hinge on narrow margins, with local factors, candidate profiles and voter turnout expected to play a decisive role across constituencies.

Polling for the 140-member Kerala Assembly will take place on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4.
