Jakarta – A powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of eastern Indonesia in the Molucca Sea near Ternate. The tremor occurred at a shallow depth of approximately 35 kilometres, resulting in strong shaking felt across nearby regions, including North Sulawesi and Maluku.

Authorities initially issued tsunami warnings for parts of Indonesia and neighbouring countries, urging residents in coastal areas to stay alert. Small tsunami waves were recorded in several locations, but the warning was eventually lifted after assessments confirmed no major threat.

The quake caused panic among residents as strong shaking lasted several seconds, prompting many to evacuate buildings. Initial reports confirmed at least one fatality due to a collapsed structure, along with multiple injuries and damage to homes and public buildings. Emergency teams have been deployed to assess the extent of the destruction and assist affected communities.

Situated along the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, Indonesia frequently experiences seismic activity. Authorities have cautioned residents about possible aftershocks and urged vigilance in the coming days.
