NEW DELHI : The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to cancel this year’s traditional IPL opening ceremony, opting instead for a slow start to the 2026 season. This step has been taken ahead of the opening match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Officials stressed that the decision was made to honor and remember those affected by a tragic incident involving last year’s celebrations.
While the season opener will go ahead without entertainment performances or large-scale celebrations, the governing body is planning a major closing ceremony at the end of the tournament. The IPL 2026 final on May 31 is expected to be a grand celebration, ensuring that the tournament ends on a high note despite the quiet start.
