LONDON : Sarah Mullaly was ceremonially enthroned in Canterbury Cathedral, becoming the first female archbishop of Canterbury in history.
The ceremony, attended by approximately 2,000 guests, including Prince William and Keir Starmer, marked the official beginning of his public service. Although she took up the position earlier this year, taking the throne marks the beginning of her leadership as the spiritual head of the global Anglican Communion, which represents millions of followers worldwide.
During her speech, Mullaly emphasized the need for unity, compassion and healing in the church, acknowledging past mistakes while praying for progress. Her appointment represents a significant milestone for gender equality within the Church of England, which began ordaining women priests in the 1990s. Despite ongoing divisions in the global Anglican Communion over issues such as women’s leadership and social reform, Mullally has highlighted the importance of embracing diversity while maintaining shared values in the church.
