NEW DELHI : Iran has allowed two Indian-flagged liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers to sail through the Strait of Hormuz, four sources with direct knowledge of the matter told news agency Reuters, in a move that could ease concerns over energy supplies amid heightened regional tensions.

The vessels, carrying cooking gas cargo bound for India, were granted passage through the strategically vital waterway despite ongoing military escalation in the region that has disrupted shipping routes and raised fears of supply bottlenecks.

The decision comes as several commercial vessels have been delaying or rerouting voyages due to security concerns in the Gulf and around the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most critical energy transit corridors through which a significant share of global oil and gas shipments pass.

Sources familiar with the matter said the clearance from Iranian authorities allowed the Indian-flagged LPG carriers to continue their journey toward India, potentially helping ease pressure on domestic cooking gas supplies.

Separately, a crude oil tanker is expected to arrive in India on Saturday carrying Saudi Arabian oil after sailing through the Strait earlier this month, according to shipping data and two sources cited by Reuters.

The latest movement suggests that, despite rising geopolitical tensions linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran and regional powers, some energy shipments are still navigating the narrow maritime passage under monitored conditions.
