DHAKA : Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman is set to become Bangladesh’s next prime minister after his party won a majority in Thursday’s parliamentary election, according to results reported by local media and confirmed by election officials.
Private broadcaster Jamuna TV reported that the BNP and its allies secured 211 of the 299 constituency seats contested, while the rival Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance won 70 seats.
The Bangladesh Election Commission later confirmed the outcome, clearing the way for the BNP to form the next government.

Shafiqur Rahman, head of Jamaat-e-Islami, said his party would respect the outcome of the election and would refrain from engaging in obstructive “politics of opposition” following the defeat.
Bangladesh’s parliament comprises 350 lawmakers, including 300 elected directly from single-member constituencies and 50 seats reserved for women. Voting took place in 299 constituencies due to the death of one candidate.
Alongside the parliamentary vote, a referendum was held on a package of political reforms, including proposals to introduce term limits for the prime minister, strengthen checks on executive authority and establish safeguards against the consolidation of parliamentary power.
