CANBERRA: The topical storm Mitchell intensifies, putting the Pilbara region, including Port Hedland, the world’s biggest iron ore hub, on high alert.

The system strengthened to a Category 3 cyclone, producing winds of up to 195 kilometers per hour, the Bureau of Meteorology said. In response, Pilbara Ports confirmed the suspension of operations at Port Hedland, as well as Ashburton, Preston West Head, Dampier and Varanus Island, as safety measures were activated ahead of the storm.

Forecasters have warned that the cyclone is expected to cross the coast between Exmouth and Onslow within hours, potentially causing significant damage, power outages and dangerous weather conditions. Residents of the affected areas are asked to stay at home and carefully follow official advice.
