Khoula and Al Nahda hospitals in Muscat perform over 25,000 surgeries in 2025

More than 25,000 surgical operations were performed at Khoula and Al Nahda hospitals during 2025, marking a significant rise in healthcare capacity and service delivery in the Sultanate of Oman.

MUSCAT – According to the Directorate General of Khoula Hospital, the total number of surgeries reached 25,865 operations in 2025, compared to 13,317 surgeries in 2021, representing an increase of 94.2 percent.

Speaking to the Oman News Agency, Dr. Rashid bin Mohammed Al Alawi, Director General of Khoula Hospital, said the procedures covered multiple medical specialties at Khoula and Al Nahda hospitals. Orthopaedic surgeries topped the list with 4,741 operations, followed by ophthalmology (3,821), obstetrics and gynaecology (3,636), ENT surgeries (3,114), plastic and reconstructive surgery (2,763), general surgery (2,615), hand surgery (2,323), dental surgery (1,804), and neurosurgery (1,048).
Dr. Al Alawi noted that the day care surgery building at Khoula Hospital recorded 8,046 operations in 2025, up from 3,450 operations in 2023, an increase of 133.2 percent. These procedures included advanced orthopaedic, general, vascular, plastic, hand, maxillofacial, ophthalmic, and ENT surgeries.
In diagnostic services, Khoula Hospital carried out 15,507 MRI scans, 27,293 CT scans, 17,447 ultrasound examinations, 131,446 X-rays, 3,091 bone density tests, 2,383 mammograms, and 4,430 EEG examinations during 2025, alongside a noticeable reduction in waiting times.

Laboratory services also witnessed strong growth, with nearly 1.3 million laboratory tests conducted during the year, averaging 3,559 tests per day, including referrals from health institutions inside and outside Muscat Governorate.

The Pain Management Unit recorded more than 1,930 therapeutic interventions in 2025, compared to 469 in 2022, while reducing waiting times from 72 weeks to less than nine weeks. Meanwhile, the Diagnostic and Therapeutic Endoscopy Department performed 2,218 procedures, cutting waiting times to less than three weeks.

Dr. Al Alawi highlighted the introduction of several advanced medical services, including breast tumour and reconstructive surgeries, specialised colorectal services, and vascular procedures at Khoula Hospital. Al Nahda Hospital witnessed the localisation of prosthetic eye services, the launch of an electrophysiology unit, and the introduction of artificial eye services.

In the field of digital transformation, the Directorate implemented multiple projects, including upgrading the data centre, modernising network infrastructure, launching a digital patient journey board for operating rooms, applying automated call systems, and renewing IT equipment to enhance efficiency and cybersecurity.

He added that the Directorate launched several exceptional initiatives to reduce surgical waiting lists. These include initiatives to perform 12,000 MRI scans, 1,500 cataract surgeries, 1,000 paediatric tonsillectomies, 750 joint replacement surgeries, 1,000 arthroscopic procedures, 600 spinal surgeries, and 500 bariatric surgeries within one year.

He pointed out that ongoing and future projects include establishing an epilepsy unit, a lung and sleep disorders unit, expanding kidney dialysis services, operating a new 22-bed intensive care unit, and upgrading 35 private rooms at Khoula Hospital.

He affirmed that these achievements reflect the Directorate’s commitment to enhancing specialised healthcare services, advancing digital transformation, and supporting institutional innovation, in line with the goals of the health sector in the Sultanate of Oman.
