MUSCAT : The Muttrah Cable Car project is nearing completion and is expected to be fully operational before the end of the first quarter of the year, according to Khalid Al Nabhani, co-founder and chief executive of Sabeen Group.

Speaking in an interview with Oman TV, Al Nabhani said construction of the Muttrah Teleferik is progressing in line with planned timelines, with key structural components now approaching completion.

“The project is moving ahead as expected, and all components will be ready before the end of the first quarter of 2026,” he said, noting that work on one of the main towers is in its final stages. He added that earlier challenges linked to Muttrah’s rugged terrain have been successfully addressed.

“The project is somewhat technically complex and also practically challenging, as Matrah has a difficult terrain being between the sea and the mountains. Moreover, the project passes through various elements involving multiple stakeholders, but all challenges have been overcome, he noted.

Positioned as a flagship tourism development, the cable car is designed to offer visitors a unique aerial experience over Muscat’s coastline and historic quarters, strengthening Muttrah’s appeal as a core destination for international and domestic tourists.

“We are expecting four million passengers annually,” he informed.

The system will operate through three stations: a Port Station near the Muttrah fish market, a Mountain Top Station behind Al Riyam Park offering 360-degree views of the coast, and a third station at Hay Al Ward, commonly known as the Kalbuh Park.

Al Nabhani said the areas surrounding the stations are being developed as integrated leisure zones, offering experiences for families and repeat visitors. Plans include international brand outlets, restaurants and dedicated spaces for small and medium-sized enterprises. The Mountain Top Station will feature an orchid centre and a children’s roller coaster, while the Kalbuh Park station will focus on dining and SME showcases.

Designed for Muscat’s climate, the cable car cabins will be fully air-conditioned, allowing residents and tourists to visit the attraction multiple times a week throughout the year, including during the peak summer months.

The cable car system is being designed and manufactured by Swiss firm Bartholet, which has completed more than 300 installations globally over its 60-year history. The fleet will comprise 18 cabins, including two VIP units. Standard cabins will seat eight passengers, while VIP cabins will accommodate four.

Once completed, the Muttrah Cable Car is expected to become a cornerstone of Muscat’s tourism infrastructure, supporting visitor growth, extending length of stay and adding a new experiential dimension to one of the capital’s most historic districts.
