Muscat: OQ, the global energy investment group, has contributed to the restoration of a section of the historic Sur Al Aqur wall in the Wilayat of Nizwa, Al Dakhiliyah Governorate. The initiative forms part of OQ’s approach to community partnership and social investment. It supports the preservation of Omani heritage, national identity and sustainable social and economic development.

The project aims to reinforce Nizwa’s position as a leading cultural and tourism destination. It also aligns with OQ’s long-term focus on education, entrepreneurship and cultural development. As part of the initiative, OQ commissioned 14 illustrated art panels along the wall. The artworks were created by Omani artists in collaboration with small and medium enterprises, with voluntary participation from OQ employees. This collective effort reflects a spirit of inclusivity and shared ownership. Through these artworks, stories of people and place are brought to life, inspired by the site’s historical memory and rich cultural heritage.

The initiative also includes the establishment of 14 dedicated retail outlets for Omani entrepreneurs. These provide a platform to showcase local products and engage directly with visitors and tourists. Together, the restoration works, public art and SME outlets transform the historic site into a vibrant destination that brings together heritage preservation and economic participation. This supports local economic diversification and aligns with national development priorities.

The inauguration ceremony was held in the presence of H.E Ahmed bin Saleh al Rashdi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs, Ashraf Hamed Al Mamari, OQ’s Group Chief Executive Officer, along with Omani artists, entrepreneurs and several local community partners.

This initiative to restore part of Sur Al Aqur supports OQ’s community efforts to preserve Oman’s rich historical and civilisational heritage. It also contributes to its development, making it more attractive for tourism and more sustainable for future generations. By adding artistic elements that embody fine arts, it helps stimulate creative youth and enriches the cultural movement, while highlighting the aesthetic dimensions of the wall. It also enables small and medium enterprise owners to engage in self-employment and participate effectively in these community projects.
