Gold, silver strike record highs as rate-cut hopes shine

Gold and silver prices surged to fresh record highs, buoyed by softer US inflation data and labour market signals.

Muscat: Gold climbed about 1 per cent in spot trading to touch an all-time high of $4,384.50 an ounce, while US gold futures rose 0.7 per cent to $4,416.30 an ounce. Silver outperformed, jumping 3 per cent in spot trading to a record $69.14 an ounce.

Gold has gained 67 per cent so far this year, supported by geopolitical and trade tensions, robust central bank purchases and expectations of lower borrowing costs in 2026. Silver has surged even more sharply, rising 125 per cent since the start of the year.

Platinum rose 2.6 per cent to $2,028.34 an ounce, marking its highest level in more than 17 years, while palladium advanced 3.8 per cent to $1,772.74 an ounce, its strongest level in nearly three years.
