ISLAMABAD : A powerful suicide bombing ripped through the entrance of a district court complex in Pakistan’s capital on Tuesday, killing at least 12 people and wounding 27 others, in one of the deadliest attacks to strike Islamabad in recent years.

The explosion occurred near the main gate of the judicial complex, when the bomber detonated explosives after being stopped from entering the premises. The blast tore through a police vehicle and nearby cars, scattering debris across the busy area.

“The attacker was attempting to enter the complex but was intercepted by security personnel,” said Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. “It was a suicide explosion targeting the police vehicle outside the court.”

Eyewitnesses said the explosion was heard several kilometres away. Emergency teams and police rushed to the scene as authorities sealed off the area.

No group has claimed responsibility so far, but security officials suspect the involvement of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) or affiliated militant networks that have previously carried out similar attacks in the capital.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the bombing, calling it a “cowardly act aimed at destabilising the country.” He directed hospitals to provide the best medical care to the injured and ordered a high-level investigation.

The blast, which damaged multiple vehicles and nearby structures, comes amid a renewed wave of militant violence across Pakistan, prompting authorities to heighten security in major cities, particularly around government and judicial buildings.

Security analysts say the attack underscores the continuing threat posed by extremist groups and the urgent need to strengthen counterterrorism measures in urban areas.
