WASHINGTON: Dick Cheney, the former US Vice President and one of the most influential and divisive figures in modern American politics, has passed away at the age of 84.
Cheney died due to complications from pneumonia along with cardiac and vascular disease, according to a family statement. He passed away surrounded by his loved ones.
A central architect of American policy in the early 2000s, Cheney served as Vice President from 2001 to 2009 under President George W. Bush. He played a defining role in the United States’ response to the September 11 attacks, shaping national-security strategy, expanding intelligence and counter-terrorism operations, and steering decisions that led to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Before his vice presidency, Cheney served as US Secretary of Defense during the Gulf War, White House Chief of Staff, and a long-time member of Congress.
