MUSCAT : This historic moment not only unified the nation but also set the foundations of sovereignty, stability, and progress, values that continue to shape Oman’s renewed renaissance under the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik.
Muscat: The Al Busaidi dynasty’s establishment in 1744 marked a defining chapter in Omani history, a time when unity triumphed over division, and Oman asserted its sovereignty with resilience and vision. The adoption of November 20 as the National Day reflects this continuity, serving as both a tribute to the founding Imam and a reaffirmation of Oman’s enduring statehood.
His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, in his address on January 11, marking the anniversary of his assumption of power, emphasized the significance of this date: “We declare the twentieth of November of each year to be the National Day of the Sultanate of Oman… the day on which the Al Busaidi family had the honor of serving this dear homeland since the year 1744.”

Dr. Nasser bin Abdullah Al-Saqri of Sultan Qaboos University noted that Imam Ahmed bin Said’s leadership established the principles of sovereignty that continue to define Oman’s independence and unity. His rule overcame internal strife and external threats, laying the groundwork for a state rooted in justice, diplomacy, and stability.
Echoing this, Dr. Bahya bint Saeed Al-Adhoubi explained that the Al Busaidi legacy evolved through successive sultans, notably Sayyid Said bin Sultan, whose reign elevated Oman’s influence across the Indian Ocean and East Africa. The modern renaissance, launched by the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said, expanded these horizons, ushering in an era of education, infrastructure, and international diplomacy that positioned Oman as a beacon of peace and neutrality.
Under His Majesty the Sultan’s leadership, this renaissance continues through administrative and economic reforms aligned with Oman Vision 2040, focusing on diversification, youth empowerment, and sustainable growth.
Dr. Younis bin Jamil Al-Nu’mani highlighted Oman’s maritime legacy, where geography inspired exploration and naval strength. Imam Ahmed bin Said, recognizing this heritage, revived Oman’s naval power to safeguard sovereignty and expand influence, a vision that continues today through Oman’s enduring maritime diplomacy.
On the cultural front, Dr. Hanan bint Mahmoud Ahmed underscored the role of national days in strengthening identity and unity. She reflected on Omani milestones, from Sultan Said bin Sultan’s 19th-century expansion to the historic voyage of the ship Sultana to the United States, as testaments to Oman’s enduring global engagement.
Equally notable is the contribution of women in the Al Busaidi lineage. Dr. Ahlam bint Hamoud Al-Jahouri shed light on the pivotal roles played by figures such as Sayyida Moza bint Ahmed Al Busaidi, who exercised political and diplomatic authority during her regency, and Sayyida Salma, the first Arab woman to write in German. Their influence continues to symbolize the active role of Omani women in leadership and cultural life.
As Oman stands on the threshold of its 281st year since the founding of the Al Busaidi State, the message remains timeless, that greatness is both inherited and renewed. The journey that began in 1744 continues to thrive, guided by a vision rooted in unity, wisdom, and the unbroken bond between leadership and people. Under His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s stewardship, the Sultanate carries forward the torch of its illustrious past into a future defined by progress, stability, and enduring pride.
