ABU DHABI : According to Emarat Al Youm, the Abu Dhabi Police clarified that under the new directive, drivers below 21 who accumulate 24 traffic points during their probation period will face immediate license suspension. They can either accept a six-month suspension or pay Dh2,400 to complete a one-day rehabilitation course under the Traffic Points Program.
However, if the same driver reaches the maximum point limit again within the trial period, their license will be revoked entirely, and they will be barred from applying for a new one for a full year from the date of cancellation.
Lieutenant Colonel Saeed Khalfan Al Kaabi, from the Traffic Points Program Department, said the policy is designed “to instill greater responsibility among young drivers and reduce serious traffic violations.” He stressed that the initiative focuses on behavioral reform rather than punishment.

Under the UAE’s federal traffic law, each violation carries a specific number of points that remain on a driver’s record for one year. Once the cumulative limit of 24 points is reached, the license is suspended, and the driver must either serve the suspension or undergo a rehabilitation program to regain driving privileges.
For drivers aged 21 and above, the penalties are comparatively lenient. A first-time 24-point accumulation leads to a three-month suspension or a similar training program, while repeat violations within a year extend the suspension to six months.
Al Kaabi highlighted that severe infractions, such as running a red light (12 points) or endangering lives (23 points), are among the top causes of fatal road accidents.
Speaking on Abu Dhabi Police’s Amn wa Aman (Safety and Security) program, Al Kaabi explained that motorists with 8 to 23 points can voluntarily attend awareness sessions at centers in Mussafah, Al Ain, and Zayed City for Dh800, which helps reduce their record by eight points.
