Muscat – In a major medical milestone reaffirming its role as a national reference centre for specialised healthcare, the University Medical City has successfully performed a highly complex paediatric surgical procedure, further cementing its leadership in advanced medical care in the Sultanate of Oman.

The joint medical team from SQUH and the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University, led by Dr. Ghalia bint Khalid Al Maawali, Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery and Consultant Paediatric Surgeon, successfully conducted a delicate operation on a two-month-old infant diagnosed with biliary atresia, a rare and serious liver condition.

The team performed the Kasai procedure, a highly specialised and technically demanding surgery, using advanced endoscopic techniques. The operation marks a significant achievement in the field of paediatric surgery, given the complexity and precision required.

Post-surgery follow-ups showed a notable improvement in the infant’s liver function and a marked decrease in blood bilirubin levels – a strong indicator of the procedure’s success. The early intervention plays a vital role in reducing the risk of chronic liver fibrosis and delaying or preventing the need for liver transplantation in the future.

This achievement highlights the competence of Omani medical professionals and their ability to perform high-level surgeries aligned with international standards, while also demonstrating the impact of collaboration between academic and clinical institutions.
