UNITED NATIONS : Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday dismissed allegations that Tehran is pursuing nuclear weapons, telling the United Nations General Assembly that Iran has “never sought and will never seek to build a nuclear bomb.”

In a strongly worded address, Pezeshkian criticised the United Kingdom, France and Germany for supporting a move at the UN Security Council last month to reimpose sanctions on Iran, accusing them of acting in bad faith.

“They circumvented legal obligations,” he said. “They sought to portray Iran’s lawful remedial measures — taken in response to the United States’ withdrawal from the JCPOA [2015 nuclear deal] and Europe’s breach and incapacity — as a gross violation.”

Pezeshkian reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to its stated nuclear policy, stressing that Tehran’s actions have been a response to Western failures to honour the 2015 accord, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

The dispute over Iran’s nuclear programme has escalated since Washington withdrew from the deal in 2018, prompting Tehran to scale back its compliance. European powers have accused Iran of exceeding agreed enrichment limits, while Iran insists its programme remains peaceful.
