Manama: Carrefour has closed all of its stores in Bahrain, marking the end of the French retailer’s presence in the kingdom. The move follows similar exits in Oman and Jordan earlier this year.
Majid Al Futtaim, the Dubai-based conglomerate that holds the exclusive rights to operate Carrefour in the region, announced the closure on social media without providing specific reasons. In its place, the company is introducing its homegrown grocery brand HyperMax, which will take over six former Carrefour locations across Bahrain.
The new retail chain is designed to focus on strengthening local supply chains. According to Majid Al Futtaim, HyperMax in Bahrain will create jobs for more than 1,600 employees and work with over 250 local farmers, suppliers, and producers to stock its shelves.
