Hisor, Tajikistan: India scripted history on Monday by defeating Oman 3–2 on penalties to secure third place in the CAFA Nations Cup 2025, marking their first-ever victory over the Gulf side in international football.

The contest was fiercely fought, with Oman drawing first blood in the 55th minute through Jameel Al Yahmadi. For long stretches, it looked as though Oman would hold on to their slender lead. But India struck back in the 80th minute when Udanta Singh rose to meet a cross with a stunning diving header, levelling the score at 1–1 and forcing extra time.

Tensions escalated during extra time as Oman were reduced to 10 men after captain Ali Al Busaidi was shown a red card in the 96th minute. Despite India’s dominance with the numerical advantage, neither side managed to break the deadlock, sending the match to a dramatic penalty shootout.

In the shootout, India held their nerve. Lallianzuala Chhangte, Rahul Bheke, and Jithin MS all converted their spot-kicks, while goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu delivered the defining moment—saving Al Yahmadi’s decisive penalty to hand India a 3–2 triumph.

The victory carried special significance for Indian football. It was the Blue Tigers’ maiden medal at the CAFA Nations Cup and their first win over Oman after decades of heartbreak against the Gulf nation. It also served as a statement start to the Khalid Jamil era, with the new head coach guiding India to an impressive finish on their tournament debut.

For Oman, the loss was a bitter blow after a promising campaign, while for India, the bronze medal symbolized resilience, belief, and a bold step forward on the continental stage.
