MUSCAT : The index, which assesses 125 countries worldwide on their journey to net-zero emissions, placed three GCC states at the top of the Middle East and North Africa rankings. It measures performance across two key dimensions: the Performance Index, reflecting the use of emissions mitigation technologies, and the Score Boosters Index, tracking readiness for transition to a low-carbon economy.
In 2024, GCC countries scored 35.8 points in the Performance Index, a sharp rise from 29.7 in 2023, while their Score Boosters Index improved to 47.2 from 45.6 points.
The GCC has also made marked strides in renewable energy, now accounting for 0.43% of the world’s total renewable energy design capacity, a major leap from just 0.03% in 2015.

The GCC Supreme Council reaffirmed its commitment to the core pillars of energy transition, energy security, economic development, and climate action, under the circular carbon economy framework. Member states continue to follow the four guiding principles: reducing, reusing, recycling, and removing emissions.
