LONDON — Frank Caprio, the Rhode Island judge celebrated worldwide as “the nicest judge in the world,” has passed away following a battle with cancer, his family confirmed on social media.

Caprio rose to fame for his unique approach to justice — blending fairness with compassion. From dismissing minor tickets to offering heartfelt advice, he turned his courtroom into what he described as a place “where people and cases are met with kindness and compassion.”

Appointed as a judge in 1985, Caprio became a household name through the TV series Caught in Providence, where clips of his empathetic rulings went viral, earning him admiration far beyond the United States.
