PRETORIA – In an interview with Agence France-Presse, Lamola welcomed recent moves by France, Canada, and other nations to recognise the State of Palestine, saying such steps could help build momentum to end the war in the devastated Palestinian territory.

He called on Israel to end its genocidal activities, allow humanitarian aid to reach the population of Gaza, and agree to go to the negotiating table to stop the war.

Referring to the ‘famine’ in Gaza, Lamola said, “We warned in our case before the International Court of Justice that all of this would lead to famine and the complete cleansing of the population in Gaza.”
In December 2023, South Africa filed a complaint with the International Court of Justice accusing Israel of committing ‘genocide’ in the Gaza Strip.

In January 2024, the court urged Israel to make every effort “to avoid acts of genocide during its military operations in the Gaza Strip, including by providing urgent humanitarian assistance to prevent famine.”
