BRUSSELS : The new Entry/Exit System will begin its gradual rollout from October 12, 2025. The system is part of the EU’s broader “Smart Borders” initiative, designed to strengthen external security while streamlining the travel experience for non-EU visitors.

Magnus Brunner, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration explained that it tracks entry and exit, identifies illegal immigrants and overstayers, prevents irregular movement, and reduces document and identity fraud.

The EES will replace traditional passport stamping with advanced technology that records biometric data—such as fingerprints and facial images—alongside other key travel information. It will apply to all non-EU citizens visiting 29 countries, including those in the Schengen Area, for short-term stays.

To ease the transition, the implementation will be staggered over a six-month period, allowing EU member states, travelers, and airlines to adapt to the new system. Public awareness campaigns will be launched across airports and land borders in the weeks leading up to the start date.

The system is expected to significantly reduce wait times, enhance identity verification, and improve the overall efficiency of cross-border movement, while reinforcing security against document fraud and unauthorized entry.
